Hyundai Merchant Marine has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai Global Services to install exhaust gas cleaning systems on an undisclosed number of vessels.
The containership and bulk carrier owner will install the scrubber system developed by Hyundai Global Services parent company Hyundai Heavy Industries last year, with the units to be built in Yantai, China. The retrofitting subsidiary will be responsible for undertaking design work for future ship modifications.
Hyundai Heavy Industries’ marine scrubber is based on the company’s systems deployed at power plants and is said to remove nearly all sulphuric, hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids from engine exhaust gases. The manufacturer claims its marine system is around 35% smaller than mainstream European systems and has projected sales of around 50 units each year.
Hyundai Global Services specialises in providing retrofit services – notably for scrubbers and ballast water management systems – for ships built by Hyundai Heavy Industries’ three shipbuilding divisions. In March, the company reached an agreement with Hanjin Heavy Industries to provide the same service for vessels built by that company.
As well as offering Hyundai-developed scrubbers and ballast water treatments, the service company also has agreements with other providers, including Wärtsilä and Alfa Laval.
Hyundai Merchant Marine recently ordered twelve 23,000 teu containerships from Samsung Heavy Industries (five) and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, which it has said will be fitted with scrubbers as well as being built with future LNG use in mind. Two 11,000 teu vessels delivered from Hanjin’s Subic yard in June were also fitted with scrubbers.
